Join us at the 2010 Dokshitsy Diaspora Reunion, August 20 to 22.
Deadline August 12th see bottom for a pdf
Memories of the lost Jewish communities of Eastern Europe, including Dokshitsy, live within us, and embody a shared past that continues to unite their descendants across the globe. Between the 1880s and the 1930s, thousands of Jews left Dokshitsy to seek better lives in the wider world. From Abelmans and Alloys to Warfmans and Ziskinds, they created a Dokshitsy Diaspora that extends to 6 continents.
We are reaching out to all those who either descend from the Dokshitsy Jewish Community or have expressed an interest in its history. We invite you to the Dokshitsy Diaspora Reunion, from Friday, August 20, 2010 to Sunday, August 22, 2010 at the Radisson Hotel Providence Airport in Warwick, Rhode Island. Present at the reunion will be members of the following families: Adelson, Cirlin, Ginsburg, Kusinitz, Alperovitz, Kabakoff, Kopelevich, Katz, Raichelson, Hodosh, Raskind, Friedman, Katzowicz, Hutkin, Rosoff, Drutz, Svirsky, Plavnik, and Kabachnik. Will your family be represented?
The Reunion will give us a chance to share our past and our present in the company of fellow Dokshitsy descendants. Our program, which we continue to refine based on your on your input, will allow us to learn about the experiences of our ancestors and landsleut , both in Dokshitsy and in the wider world to which we have migrated. And we have migrated- east to Russia, south to Israel, South Africa, Australia and South America, and west to Western Europe and North America; to cities and towns large and small.
The Reunion starts on Friday evening August 20, 2010. We will gather for with welcoming, candle lighting, brief services, and supper. Saturday morning we will begin at 10 AM (preceded by breakfast and optional Shabbat services) with talks about Dokshitsy history, the immigration process and the early years in our new lands.
For lunch, we will be honored with Eva Fogelman speaking about "The Psychology of remembering your Dokshitsy roots." Eva's father, Simcha Fogelman, a Holocaust survivor, was born in Dokshitsy. Eva is a well-known researcher of the Righteous Among the Nations. I am often asked why am I so obsessed with Dokshitsy. Eva will help to put the answer into words.
On Saturday afternoon , we will remember the Holocaust and its effect on our families. We will also devote time to writings about Dokshitsy. This will be followed by discussing the recent restoration of the Dokshitsy Jewish cemetery, including a visit by 14 descendants and family members, some of whom will be present. Among those present will be Joel Alpert who created a web site about Dokshitsy and also completed the English translation of the Yizkor book and posted it online, among many other accomplishments.
Scattered throughout the weekend will be time to just schmooze and to share what we know about our own families. This will give all of us a chance to meet descendants of other Dokshitsy and Parafianov families who we may have heard of from our parents and grandparents.
After a break, we will join for a closing banquet.
There will also be lighter moments, such as Dokshitsy trivia and kvelling about (and poking some fun at) celebrities with Dokshitsy roots. On Sunday morning we will have breakfast together. For the genealogy-minded, we hope to have a speaker from the National Archives, and also learn from Dokshitsy descendants how to conduct genealogical research.
The Radisson Hotel Providence Airport in Warwick, RI. still has rooms; good deals may still be found online. To reserve directly, call 1-800-395-7046.
